We need you. Pick a section and volunteer now!
Woodlawn Cemetery Association is contacting service clubs and businesses here in Winona to determine if they would be willing to assemble a team of volunteers to help out Woodlawn Cemetery. This new project, called "Adopt a Part of History" is fashioned much like the highway system here in Minnesota.
Our plan is to coordinate the various teams of volunteers from each club and business to come and maintain certain sections within the cemetery grounds in the months leading up Memorial Day. Your club or business selects a section within the cemetery to work on each week leading up to the Memorial Holiday weekend. The plan is to start this project once all of the snow has melted and safe for lawn equipment to be on the cemetery grounds. How much of a time commitment depends on the size of section the team chooses to adopt and a large part depends on the Spring weather cooperates!
Volunteering at Woodlawn Cemetery is a worthwhile community service project for any service club or business. Volunteering at Woodlawn you get to experience the beauty of cemetery, get a great workout and provide “ownership” in one of the most scenic cemeteries in the State of Minnesota.
Woodlawn needs volunteers to help with the big Spring cleanup due to the well-publicized financial challenges the cemetery is currently experiencing. Depending on the size of the cemetery requires substantial manpower. In our case we have roughly 55 acres to maintain at Woodlawn Cemetery on a weekly basis. Woodlawn has faced immense cutbacks in its seasonal workforce. The cemetery operates with a total of three seasonal employees and the Superintendent. Last Spring we tried to do this work with this limited crew and it was evident that we desperately need more people!
This Spring we want to do better, but we need your help! We need the community’s support through your business or club’s involvement. Teams will each need to provide their own lawnmowers, riding mowers, weed trimmers and some muscle!
Your consideration of this project is much appreciated. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at 507-452-6016 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
